Love Trumps Hate at Ashish Fall 2017
Right after the election, months before Robert Geller wore a DIY “Immigrant” t-shirt down the runway to take his bow at New York Fashion Week: Men’s, the Delhi-born designer Ashish Gupta debuted a line of tees with the same slogan, matching the one he’d worn in September to take his own bow on the runway. Gupta, though, is perhaps the last person who’d harbor bad feelings about the overlap: this time around at London Fashion Week, his fall 2017 was chock-full of positive messages—essentially wearable, feel-good protest signs that ranged from “Don’t give up the daydream” to “Fall in love and be more tender” to the ever-popular “Stay woke.” Direct references to Trump like “Nasty Woman” and “Pussy grabs back” found a home on sequined rainbow shirts and patriotic varsity jackets, topped off with separates like checkered miniskirts and sent down a glittery yellow runway—a reference to both Oz and Washington, with the candy-colored models standing in as Dorothy.
