There’s a reason why Berlin has retained its title as Europe’s capital of cool for over two decades. And no matter how many times you hear “Berlin is over,” it never is—and probably never will be—because it’s constantly evolving in ways that are ahead of well, everywhere else. Synonymous with gender fluidity, experimentation, and a place to realize your darkest desires, Berlin’s thriving creative scene attracts the brightest, most forward-thinking and eccentric talents. Cue German photographers like Wolfgang Tillmans, Juergen Teller, and Andreas Gursky, or artists like Isa Genzken and Tacita Dean who were lured by the city’s creative spark. On the final day of the Berlin Film Festival, we asked five of the city’s most promising photographers—Vitali Gelwich, Maxime Ballesteros, Davit Giorgadze, Cassidy George, and Burak Isseven—to offer their view of the underbelly of a weird and wild city, and the beautiful young people who keep pushing its borders.
