From Britney Spears to Bella Hadid, Celebrities Have Always Loved Colored Lenses

During the Fall 2017 runway season, it seemed that you couldn’t exit a fashion show without bumping into a model rushing to her next show, shielding her eyes (those are the moneymakers, after all) with a pair of sunglasses featuring brightly hued colored lenses. Now that spring is officially here, not to mention festival season, it’s clear that the trend wasn’t just a fluke: colored lenses are officially a thing. And like all fashion trends, this isn’t the first time they are the sunglasses of choice for celebrities. Back in the ’90s, everyone from Gwen Stefani to Jennifer Lopez rocked the trend, often matching their lenses with the rest of their ensembles. Today, Bella Hadid is leading the charge, rocking orange, blue, red, and yellow with equal aplomb, followed by fellow It-models Hailey Baldwin, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Sofia Richie, among others. But this trend is just not for Millenials, as Cate Blanchett and Katy Perry have also gotten into the look. Here, a look at colored lenses now and then.

Britney Spears paired a pink crop top with bright yellow shades to celebrate a milestone for her first album.

Gwen Stefani, with “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” collaborater Eve, attended the 2004 premiere of the film XXX in an oversized pair of shades.

In 2015, Cate Blanchett paired a Valentino dress with blue-tinted aviator glasses the upped the dosage of color in hot pink frames.
