Hidden in the hills 30 minutes north of Malibu, California, the city of Calabasas was never a place to write home about—and that’s exactly the way its residents wanted it. A lush conglomerate of various gated communities, Calabasas is where the (mostly) wealthy move to feel safe and unbothered. According to a recent census, the median household income of its some 25,000 inhabitants is well over $100,000—the bougie-est of whom live in a neighborhood literally called Hidden Hills—and it is the 13th safest city in the state after Cupertino. Drake, who was once a resident, even rapped on “2 On/Thotful”: “Crib in Calabasas man I call that sh-t the safe house / Thirty minutes from L.A., man the sh-t is way out.” Other celebrities who’ve called Calabasas home include Will Smith, Britney Spears, and Justin Bieber. But the most notable Calabas-ites are the Kardashians, who’ve put the city on the map. Over the years, curiosity about Calabasas has slowly increased, but we knew it was time to investigate when Kanye West, the unofficial Mayor, slapped the city’s name over Adidas’s iconic three stripes. His most recent Yeezy Season 5 show was also a clear ode to what can perhaps now be called “Calabasas casual wear.” And once you actually visit The Commons at Calabasas—one of the few places in the area where residents actually get out of their cars—you get a sense of what it might mean be “so Calabasas.” Here, a closer look at what the non-Kardashian residents of Calabasas wear.
