Jane’s Addiction: Baby, It’s Cold Outside

What W’s beauty director, Jane Larkworthy, is hooked on this month.

Winter is my favorite time of the year, and I try to ski as often as I can—but that requires an arsenal of products to safeguard against the sometimes harsh realities of the season:

Olay Total Effects CC Tone Correcting UV Moisturizer: Its magic ingredient, niacinamide, strengthens the skin’s barrier that holds moisture in. I love the light whipped texture. Perfect for weekend coverage. ($22, at drugstores)

Kevyn Aucoin the Volume Mascara: Sure, it makes lashes superlong, but its smudge-proof formula comes off only with warm water, so—unless you’re skiing in heated snow—you never get raccoon eyes. ($25, barneys.com)

Sun Bum Pro SPF 30+ Face Stick: On sunny days (left), I literally swipe this all over my face. ($15, trustthebum.com)

Darphin Nourishing and Firming Velvet Cream: It’s got shea butter to moisturize rough patches, but it also contains a plant extract called menyanthes trifoliata, which helps firm saggy skin. ($55, darphin.com)

Kneipp Spruce & Pine Warmth & Energy Bath: I save this stuff for those extra-cold nights. ($20, kneippus.com)

Kai Conditioner: I actually use this twice in the morning. First in the shower, then again after I dry my hair—I finger-comb in a smidge to prevent flyaways. ($34, barneys.com)

Neal’s Yard Remedies Arnica Salve: Another twofer! I rub it into my lower back and quads après-ski, and I also use it before hitting the slopes, since it’s supposed to stimulate circulation and prep muscles for active duty. ($17, nealsyardremedies.com)

There were several cool looks at the spring 2013 New York fashion shows, but my favorite was Orlando Pita’s ladylike updo with pieces of nearly neon hair woven into it at Oscar de la Renta (left). As soon as my hair gets long enough, I am definitely going to try this style.

Make is a new cosmetics brand that sets aside one-third of its revenue to help women’s start-up cooperatives in the U.S. It’s also been tapping different artisans to collaborate on various projects. Case in point: This month, makeup artist Ayami Nishimura and interior designer Faye Toogood present the Alchemy collection. My favorites are the aptly named Molten Shadows in cool Pewter (left) or warm Bronze, which go on like frosting, feel like lotion, and blend like a dream. ($12, weseebeauty.com)

I’ve been discovering fresh ways to experiment with my makeup, thanks to Sigma Beauty’s Extravaganza Complete Kit, which contains 29 brushes of all shapes, handle lengths, and even different hair types. I particularly like the Large Angled Contour (below, far left), with which I’ve been attempting to bring out my cheekbones. Let’s just say practice makes perfect. ($510, sigmabeauty.com)

Since I started coloring my hair more than 20 years ago, it’s become less soft, and my highlights can get a bit brassy. But I’ve found some help with the violet pigment in Sachajuan Silver Shampoo ($28, sachajuan.com), which keeps the blonde (left) from venturing into orange territory. Pantene AgeDefy Conditioner ($9, pantene.com), meanwhile, smooths pesky split ends as well as unruly grays. And once a week I bring a magazine into the bathtub after I slather NeuMoisture Intensive Masque ($35, neumabeauty.com for stores) all over my head. The treatment smells divine, and it’s packed with plant extracts and essential oils—which is why I let it stay on much longer than the recommended two to three minutes.
