Snake Eyes: Inside Montblanc’s 110th Anniversary Gala
Everyone had a Rainbow Room story to tell at the 110th anniversary celebration for Montblanc, which took place at the famous venue on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller — including the evening’s marquee names, Hugh Jackman and Kate Bosworth. Jackman recalled attempting to take his wife there for an anniversary dinner (at John Travolta’s recommendation), while Bosworth said her dad used to take her there as a child — though it was probably not quite the same Rainbow Room as the one Montblanc conjured last night. The party went off nearly without a hitch; as Emily DiDonato leaned down to sign Montblanc’s massive birthday card, the pen seemed to jam. She was trying to write with the nib upside-down, it turned out. And earlier in the day, a catastrophe: A priceless Montblanc watch was arranged on a snake (the serpent was a recurring motif throughout the night), which was draped around a one-off bag designed for the anniversary. Someone might have seen the potential pitfalls of perching a singular piece on an untrained, living animal, but alas, the entire display went tumbling. The watch hit a glass table, and its internal crystal cracked. It was still on display throughout the night, along with the buzz of the earlier drama.
