“We need leaders,” was the phrase stitched all over Public School‘s Spring 2017 collection, which took place on Tuesday as Americans in six states voted in the presidential primaries. The phrase had a double meaning too: Designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow are both leaders and followers of the industry, in the sense that they set their own show date and combined men’s and women’s for the first time, but are a part of a wave of brands doing the same. At the show, faceless assembly line workers hammered cinderblocks in unison while others built what was described as a “false monument.” A “metaphor,” apparently. At the end of the show, model Naleye Junior scurried off the runway to spray-paint “We need leaders” on the all-white white set. It was a fitting sentiment for Super Tuesday, but the fashion crowd went right back to their regularly scheduled programming.
