In May, Rei Kawakubo will become only the second-ever living designer to get a career retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute. But that doesn’t mean the designer is resting on her laurels. For Comme Des Garçons’ Fall 2017 collection, Kawakubo explored silhouette via bulbous, amoeba-shaped garments that recalled, alternatively, hairballs, Jiffy Pop, and the contents of a Lava Lamp. Fascinatingly, the models, like Anna Cleveland, didn’t just parade the looks, but interact with each other as if they were all paramecia bouncing around in Kawakubo’s fashion petri dish. No matter what, Tom Brady will look great in it at the Met Gala.
