Indecent Proposal
Among Yves Saint Laurent’s most memorable moments was his 1971 haute couture collection—a scandalous parade of flowy dresses, fur chubbies, and chunky heels that recalled the outfits worn by wartime streetwalkers. Though skewered by the critics, the clothes became an outright sensation with the disco set, and one was reminded of them looking at the spring collections of Tom Ford and Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. If the short shorts, skimpy tops, and towering platforms they sent down the runways appeared a bit louche in their channeling of ’70s icons like the model Donna Jordan and Jodie Foster’s child-prostitute character in Taxi Driver, well, they were. But wouldn’t you know it—they’re also the hottest things going this season.
