It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Chloë Sevigny. She’s been relatively quiet on the style front since the Cannes Film Festival back in May, where she made her debut as a short film director with Kitty. For the two-week festival, she stepped out at all the major premieres in a dizzying array of designs — who packs light for Cannes? — including Chanel and Alessandra Rich. But now, the ’90s cult icon is back and armed with a lot of Gucci for a party in Los Angeles with Kiernan Shipka and Brie Larson. Just don’t ask her to, you know, match.

Who: Chloë Sevigny.

When: Sunday, August 21.

Where: The BB Dakota-sponsored closing night party for Women in Cinefamily, a weekend-long event hosted by Oscar winner Brie Larson.

What: A black embellished Gucci top and skirt, turquoise heeled peep-toe shoes with a lip motif, and a gold box bag.

Why: Though Alessandro Michele’s Gucci might not be known for its subtlety — he’s developed quite the following for his retro-inflected embroidered, patched, and colorful designs — for Sevigny, this is a pretty low-key look given that there are no ruffles, no contrasting prints or textures, just a bit of tromp l’oeil detail and cute embellishments. It’s like a sartorial reminder that she’s a serious director now. (Just don’t call her an auteur.) It’s all professional and polished, starting with the strong-shouldered top and moving down to the sleek red skirt (matched to her signature bright red lip) and gold bag — that is, till we arrive at the shoes, which are pretty much a right-turn from the rest of the look. Gold, turquoise, pink, with a sparkle-encrusted lip design across the front, they pretend the rest of the look doesn’t exist. The top reads consummate professional; the bottom, style iconoclast. Ladies and gentlemen, Chloë Sevigny is back.
