The Pen Is Mightier

Hermès’s Artistic Director Pierre-Alexis Dumas discusses the brand’s new tool.

The Hermès Nautilus Pen

Having perfected the art of the saddle, scarf, and iconic It bag, Hermès is adding a new luxury essential to its accessory oeuvre: the pen. The Nautilus, the result of a collaboration between the Australian designer Marc Newson and Hermès Artistic Director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, pays homage to Dumas’s late father, Jean. “He always had a Capless pen from Pilot in his jacket pocket and was very proud of it because he could use it so quickly and swiftly,” explains Dumas. “And I thought, why at Hermès do we not have a beautiful writing instrument?” The pen, which comes in in two styles (fountain and ballpoint) and three colors (black, blue, and red), features unique technology developed with Pilot which, like the Capless, allows for quick, seamless writing. “Writing is a deeply human act, a way of conveying the height of human thought,” says Dumas. “People don’t write enough anymore—we all type—maybe it’s time to think about writing again.” Take note.
