A ceiling of rain descended on New York City Friday, adding an unwelcome damp and grey to an already chilly end to March. But singer, actress, and erstwhile American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez, apparently immune to such meteorological phenomena, stepped out on the last day of March in a shimmering, butterfly-patterned minidress for a date at the Columbus Circle restaurant Marea with rumored boyfriend Alex Rodriguez.

It wasn't the first time Lopez had opted for this look, a long-sleeved mini complete with pockets by Valentino. She debuted it nearly three years ago at American Idol's Nashville auditions, over which she presided alongside fellow judges Harry Connick, Jr., and Keith Urban. But she seems to have pulled it out from the back of her closet for a (presumably) romantic midafternoon date, getting an early start to the weekend and proving that celebrities aren't subject to the same climate rules as the rest of us.

Who: Jennifer Lopez.

When: Friday, March 31.

Where: Arriving at Marea in Manhattan's Columbus Circle neighborhood in New York, New York.

What: A long-sleeved minidress by Valentino patterned with butterflies and complete with pockets, paired with a high ponytail, platform heels, hoop earrings (a J.Lo staple), a wool coat by Max Mara, and a Louboutin bag. (And, the chicest accessory of all, an umbrella.)

Why: We admire the boldness of recycling such a splashy, playful look, which turns out to be the perfect thing for a lunch date, striking a balance between casual and couture. Her accessories are understated yet entirely on point — a J.Lo look wouldn't be complete without hoops — but what really completes the whole ensemble is her coy smile. Attitude, the key to pulling off any look, and Lopez has it in volumes.
