Lady Gaga Is Really Hyped for the Super Bowl

The singer and halftime show performer gets sporty in Versace.

In just two days, Lady Gaga will take the stage to perform the entirety of the Super Bowl LI halftime show — the whole thing. Sans guest-stars. And, by the look of things, she’s already in the mood for the game; on Thursday, the Mother Monster took the podium at a press conference about the game in a red, white, and blue athletic-inspired Versace ensemble. Complete with a football in hand, ready to play ball. (Of course, though she feigned a pass, no one ever scored a touchdown in heels that high or a skirt that long.) Longtime stylist Brandon Maxwell, himself a designer of the moment, has been working on his eponymous Fall 2017 collection, to show during New York Fashion Week, and prepping Gaga for her upcoming gig at the same time — double duty he seems to be navigating quite handily.

Who: Lady Gaga.

When: Thursday, February 2.

Where: A press conference for the upcoming Super Bowl in Houston, Texas.

What: A half-zip pullover with leather panels and a wrap skirt, paired with knee-high lace-up heeled boots — all by Versace from the Spring 2017 collection, all very Americana.

Why: When considered outside its Italian, runway context, this Versace look is equal parts sporty and Americana, thanks to its patriotic color palette. At the same time, the Versace Spring 2017 collection was a kind of ode to women’s strength, physical and otherwise. Naomi Campbell walked the runway in this particular look, which features utilitarian details like a D-ring enclosure on the skirt, functional fabrics, and cleat-like soles on the heels. Gaga’s rendering is a bit more demure — there’s no bare midriff in sight — but she’s found the perfect look that blends a sporty edge with her own, sometimes absurdist fashion inclinations. Plus, like Campbell, Gaga is a titan in her field — just the kind of woman Versace must have envisioned when assembling this collection. (Football not included.)
