Olivia Wilde Would Make a Great Drinking Buddy

There was proof at the appropriately boozy premiere of her new film.

What: A screening of Magnolia Pictures’s Drinking Buddies, a new, almost entirely improvised film from director Joe Swanberg. Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson) are coworkers at a Chicago brewery—where the manager is played by Wilde’s real life fiancé Jason Sudekis—who have a flirtatious friendship even though they are both involved in serious relationships with Chris (Ron Livingston) and Jill (Anna Kendrick), respectively.

When: Monday, August 19

Where: A pre-party at Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The downstairs bar really set the tone for the evening, but the drinking didn’t stop there: waiters served cans of the finest beer from Revolution Brewery in Chicago, where Drinking Buddies was filmed, throughout the screening.

Who: Wilde and Swanberg were joined by several rising TV stars, including Alex Karpovsky (Girls), Thomas Matthews (Newsroom), and Matt McGorry (Orange is the New Black)—the latter of whom commented during a Q&A session which followed the film: “I loved the movie, first of all, congratulations to you both” to which Wilde jokingly retorted, “Do you write for The New York Times?”

Why: We learned that “it takes a lot” to get Wilde drunk: “I’m pretty dense,” she said. And with the amount of beer consumed both during both the film and the screening, we’re inclined to believe her.
