Prabal’s Power

The designer co-hosted a screening with Susan Sarandon for a good cause

Pushpa Basnet and Prabal Gurung

What: Prabal Gurung and Susan Sarandon hosted a screening of the documentary “Waiting for Mamu,” which chronicles Kathmandu’s Early Childhood Development Center–a non-profit supported by Gurung’s Shikshya Foundation Nepal.

Where: NeueHouse New York City.

When: Wednesday, March 12th.

Who: The designer hosted a crowd of friends including Indré Rockefeller, Monique Péan, and Pushpa Basnet, founder of the ECDC and 2012 CNN Hero of the Year.

Why: The film brings you inside the ECDC, where Basnet takes in children of incarcerated parents who would otherwise grow up behind bars. Post-screening, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. “The program has a focus on girls, which for me is extremely important,” explained Gurung. “In developing countries, when you educate and empower women, it’s often their families who are taken care of. And plus, as you know, I am a big believer in women in power.”
