Dutch design whiz Marcel Wanders isn’t a fan of typical spa decor. “It looks like there is only one way to do spas: with an Asian feel,” says Wanders, who is known for his macramé Knotted Chair and designing the New York restaurant Thor. “To me, relaxing doesn’t mean that we play ding-dong songs and look at a wall of bamboo. It’s just completely unoriginal.” So Wanders is eschewing convention for his first Stateside hotel project, the Mondrian South Beach, whose $3.5 million Agua Spa will involve lots of white and have an ultramodern reception area. It opens just in time for Art Basel Miami in December, at which Wanders plans to “party my head off.” Luckily, the spa offers a Heavenly Hangover treatment.
