The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the latest anthology series from the twisted (but fun!) mind of Ryan Murphy, just released its first teaser in anticipation of an early 2018 release. We don’t get much to look at with the short tease, but what we do get is some powerful imagery that Murphy is so revered for: A tranquil, panned-out frame of Versace’s Miami mansion, now known as Casa Casuarina, is soon interrupted by two gunshots and a pack of doves flying for cover.

Unsurprisingly, Murphy recruited the crème de la crème of talent to portray the Versace family and their associates. Édgar Ramírez will take the reigns as Gianni Versace, Darren Criss will be portraying Andrew Cunanan, Penelope Cruz will embody Donatella Versace, and Ricky Martin will be playing Antonio D’Amico, Versace’s longtime boyfriend.

While little else is known about what to expect when The Assassination of Gianni Versace makes it way to the small screen, EW was able to get some exclusive details about the series earlier this summer—mostly that shooting Versace proved to be emotionally taxing for everyone involved. “It was very moving, sometimes disturbing,” Cruz said. “We all felt a very powerful energy. It just made me have more passion to tell this story.”

Murphy, meanwhile, said he was attracted to the narrative due to the questions it provoked about sexuality and homophobia in the 1990s. “The more I had read about it, the more I was startled by the fact that Cunanan really was only allowed to get away with it because of homophobia,” he explained. “There was this great apathy about it, and I think part of that was because it seemed like gay people were disposable in our culture.”
