Tory Burch continued her tour of New York’s midcentury-modern landmarks for spring 2027. Following last season’s visit to the Breuer Building, she headed downtown to Isamu Noguchi’s Sunken Garden, tucked below Gordon Bunshaft’s One Chase Manhattan Plaza skyscraper, now known as 28 Liberty. With its dark basalt boulders transplanted from Japan’s Uji River and fountains set against cream-colored granite, the serene sculpture garden was, Burch said, a “no-brainer” for the show. “It’s hard to find a garden like this in the middle of New York City,” she said. “It’s this little piece of tranquility in what feels like a tumultuous world at the moment.”
Burch has a knack for answering contemporary malaise with beauty. Backstage, the models wore ringer tees with GLORIA spelled out across the chest in varsity letters, a poignant tribute to one of Burch’s heroes, the late Gloria Steinem. On the runway, the mood she was after was “opulent femininity meets American pragmatism.” Translation: American sportswear classics—car coats, cardigans, and Burch’s now-signature hip-slung pencil skirts—made exuberant with color and embellishment. It was a characteristically Burch proposition: practical clothes for the hard work ahead, with enough glamour and eccentricity to spark joy along the way.
In their immediately recognizable archetypes, the silhouettes were deceptively simple. “There are a lot of details that aren’t obvious, but when you look closer, you really get the depth of them,” Burch said. “I think women have depth and layers.” Goddess dresses twisted and curved unexpectedly across the back, while many finishing touches were subtly off-kilter: the hem of a crisp pleated skirt was left deliberately unfinished, its edge raw and fraying; seams on tie-dye taffeta dresses were intentionally puckered; and peep-toe pumps came with extended soles that curled up and around the heel.
Handworked accessories added another dimensional layer. Most looks featured handwoven leather pumps, slingbacks, and loafers. Burch also brought back the colorful handwoven basket totes made from raffia and leather cord by Marasim, the New York-based artisan collective that employs craftspeople in India, which she introduced for fall 2026. She said she hopes to make them a regular style. Feather-like boas made from hundreds of tiny scraps of dip-dyed silk were draped around the neck or clutched tightly like an emotional support animal, adding a whimsical grace note. “If you feel them, they actually feel like feathers,” Burch said. “And they’re just as light.”
