Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and the Rest of the Balmain Army Go Grunge For Fall 2017
Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing is known to be many things: Kim Kardashian BFF, master of selfies, enthusiast of heavy embellishment. With his Fall 2017 collection, however, the designer revealed a completely new side of himself: Olivier Rousteing, Nirvana superfan. With a strong emphasis on rock-and-roll, Rousteing sent out his own homage to the grunge era, with plenty of Eighties, hair-metal influences thrown in for good measure. Set to a soundtrack that could easily have been pulled from Spotify’s “Intro to Classic Rock” playlist, Rousteing sent out a whopping 80 looks–modeled by members of his Balmain Army, including Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Joan Smalls, of course–that leaned heavily on the ‘metal’ aspect of heavy metal: swishing, beaded skirts, grommet-covered capes, chainmail shifts. It was Balmain’s walk on the wild side–and there were plenty of literal references for that, too, including crocodile-skin dresses, tiger-print gowns, and even a few ironic (we think) wolf-printed t-shirts. “Welcome to the Jungle,” indeed.
