Backstage at Dries Van Noten, Where the Artist’s Garden Grows
Every season, the resounding trends are in some sense a reaction to what came before, an inclination to do something entirely different. For fall 2020, the swinging pendulum was most apparent when it came to makeup. Where spring 2020 featured models with brightly colored, intricately painted eyes; neon lips; and exaggerated strokes of blush, this season, faces were largely scrubbed clean, save for the occasional bold lip or smoky eye (or both, at Anna Sui). For Dries Van Noten, however, the exaggerated-makeup trend persisted, with models’ foreheads painted blue and green, faces powdered white, and hair streaked with red and yellow. The looks were inspired by the Belgian designer’s well-documented love of gardening, which also showed up in the clothes. Headdresses featured floral beading; feathers lined the hems of dresses; and prints were leafy, tropical, and splattered with orchids.
