Jill Soloway, David Byrne, and Ballroom Marfa Give New York a Taste of Texas

The shocking results of last week’s election have left Jill Soloway more determined than ever to topple the patriarchy with her new production company, Topple — a mission that’s lately brought her to Marfa, Texas, where she’s been filming her female gaze-focused Amazon series “I Love Dick” with Kevin Bacon and Kathryn Hahn. That might be why Ballroom Marfa — the group leading the cultural explosion in the town of just 2,000, which you may recognize from projects like its standalone, store-like Prada installation — put Soloway at the center of its biannual New York gala on Monday night alongside fellow honoree David Byrne. The festivities started with a mariachi band that greeted guests like Rashid Johnson, Poppy Delevingne, and Francisco Costa on the sidewalk outside the event space Cedar Lake. Indoors, with some help from Roberto Cavalli, the music from Las Alteñas continued while a cowboy hat-clad crowd enjoyed dinner, a performance by Terry Allen, and a display of artwork from names like Ed Ruscha and the late, longtime Marfa figure Donald Judd.
