Paco Rabanne Fall 2020
The house of Paco Rabanne has never been one to shy away from playful, unconventional materials and heavily textured, pattern-on-pattern looks. But this season, the artistic director Julien Dossena took things in a more sober direction, sticking to a traditionally autumnal, sepia-tinted color palette. Silhouettes felt mostly Victorian, with Russian embroidery and a few signature all-over chain mail pieces mixed in. The overall effect was Rumors-era Stevie Nicks meets an A24 remake of Antony and Cleopatra. Beaded fringe—a trend that popped up at Rodarte, Prada, and others—appeared along the edges of metal ponchos, face-obscuring hoods, and capes, giving some looks a ritualistic sense of movement as weak as a sonic element. In contrast, hair and makeup were light and natural, with tousled bangs and lightly flushed faces that evoked a brisk country walk.
