Up until midway through 1992, W magazine published two issues monthly — which gave Kate Moss twice as many issues cover opportunities each year. But beyond Moss’s frequent appearances on the magazine’s cover, *W*‘s pages were also graced by the likes of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour — the whole crew of ’90s “supers.” Over the course of the decade, that started to shift: Models on the cover slowly gave way to film and music stars on the cover. Nicole Kidman and Annette Bening were among the first, appearing as early as 1992, but it wasn’t until Tom Cruise in 1997 that the trend became apparent. Looking back on these covers from a 2016 vantage highlights how many of these fashion and screen stars are still relevant today. And, hey, some of the cover lines still work.
