Ambre Dahan

Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane isn’t the only French expat to put down roots in Los Angeles.

Ambre Dahan hardly found Los Angeles a sunshiny place when she arrived nine years ago. “I thought it was horrible,” she says. “I felt lost—and it didn’t help that I had never driven in my life!” But she stayed for love, having moved to be closer to her boyfriend, Joe Dahan, the Moroccan-born founder of Joe’s Jeans, who subsequently hired her as the brand’s design director. The couple, now married and raising two little girls, split their time between a spacious Harold Levitt–designed abode in the hills above West Hollywood and a beach house in Malibu. And Dahan, whose style has become more California-friendly (“I still wear Repettos, but now I pair them with denim shorts”), has shifted her focus from Joe’s to Walkinmycloset.com, a multifunctional fashion magazine, wardrobe organizer, and e-commerce site she launched in May. Suffice it to say, she has finally settled in quite nicely. “I go to Paris now, and it feels so rigid,” she notes. “I don’t see myself there at all.”
