On Fire: Merida

While not quite as trendy as nearby Tulum, Mérida, the capital of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, is having a moment. Artists like Vija Celmins have already discovered the charms of the languid city that served as the headquarters for Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century. And last November, W’s Market Director Karla Martinez de Salas got married there in an elegant, albeit tequila-soaked event that drew fashion folks like photographer Tim Walker and Anndra Neen designer Phoebe Stephens. Next month the venerable candle company Cire Trudon, in collaboration with the niche perfumery Arquiste, will introduce Mérida, a sweet, woodsy scent that features notes of guava and mahogany. Smelling it is the next best thing to being there.
