It took a bit longer than usual (hello, climate change), but we’ve officially traded in leather jacket weather for parka weather. The first snow has already descended on New York, blanketing the city (and then, just as quickly, melted away), and temperatures continue to drop as the holidays and the dead of winter approach. Autumn is every street style star’s dream — so many opportunities for layering, so many different pieces to fold into one look — but winter presents a distinct challenge. How does one style one’s look, when it’s just going to be covered by the largest puffer jacket imaginable? (Rihanna might have an answer to that. So, apparently, does Gigi Hadid. We’re asking the important questions here, and our street style favorites aren’t letting us down.)
Who: Gigi Hadid.
When: Monday, December 12.
Where: Wandering the streets of Soho, New York.
What: A striped overcoat with contrasting knitted sleeves by Victoria Beckham with an ivory turtleneck sweater, black distressed jeans, flat black boots by Freda Salvador, sunglasses by Karen Walker, and a black leather bag by Mansur Gavriel.
Why: Hadid has got chic winter layers down — so well that we’re not totally sure that’s really her in there beneath all that knitwear. A turtleneck sweater envelops most of her face, topped off with paparazzi-proof oversized sunglasses and a sleek ponytail. Layered over the top, she’s belted a sleek overcoat with an almost corset-like detailing at the waist. It’s striped both ways in black and ivory, a slightly darker tone than her sweater for contrast, and it culminates in a cozy black knitted collar and sweater sleeves. If you’re going for sweater weather, you might as well do it all the way, base layer and outerwear alike. Hadid nails the model-off-duty look, even in the depths of winter, with a pair of black jeans, black boots, and every It girl’s favorite accessories line, Mansur Gavriel.
