Once the tabloid press connects you to Justin Bieber, it seems to follow you everywhere. Hailee Steinfeld, just 20-year-old and already an Academy Award nominee, does not need that in her life Let it be known for once and for all that she is not dating Justin Bieber, not now, not ever. Talk of the would-be pairing picked up steam when TMZ reported that the two have been together for about a month, with the outlet even giving them a meet-cute in which they were introduced by the pastor at the church they supposedly both attend. The story quickly spread, as a match-up of two of young Hollywood’s inner sanctum was bound to do, but in a twist, the truth got in the way of a good scoop: Steinfeld and Bieber are just friends.

Steinfeld avowed the platonic nature of their connection herself on Thursday, stopping by SiriusXM Hits 1’s “Morning Mash Up.” Asked if she was seeing Bieber, Steinfeld insisted, “I am not.” The actress also got real about the oddity of suddenly being romantically linked to someone you’ve associated with forever, saying, “It’s crazy. I don’t know why people make such a big deal. We’re friends. We’ve been friends for years.” Indeed, if Steinfeld’s words weren’t confirmation enough, it seems that little about the initial rumor holds true. Beyond Steinfeld’s own testament that her and Bieber’s friendship is nothing new, she and Bieber couldn’t have met through their church last month, because, as Gossip Cop reports, Steinfeld doesn’t even attend the church in question.

Of course, Bieber is no stranger to dating rumors running rampant, no matter how implausible. Ever since the dissolution of his lengthy on-off relationship with Selena Gomez, he’s been linked to his fair share of new ladies, Hailey Baldwin, Kourtney Kardashian, and Sofia Richie among them. For her part, Steinfeld has historically kept a tighter lid on her personal life, though she did hit the red carpet with paramour Cameron Smoller earlier this year. While Bieber will surely find an Olive Garden dining partner of his own one day, it looks like Steinfeld isn’t it.
