Kyle DeWoody, the daughter of the art collector Beth Rudin DeWoody and the painter James DeWoody, had her first brush with creative collaboration at the tender age of 8: She worked with the photographer-illustrator David Croland, a family friend, to make a wardrobe for her Barbies. Now, as the cofounder of the retail site Grey Area, the 28-year-old spends her days finding and commissioning artist-made wares—albeit more grown-up ones, like Tom Sachs cigarette lighters and Rudolf Stingel plates.

After graduating with an art history degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 2007, DeWoody tried film production and costume design before landing a job in the retail department of the Whitney Museum in New York. In 2011, Manish Vora, the cofounder of the e-zine Artlog, approached her with the idea to start an online art-object shop—and Grey Area was born.

“People are still intimidated by the art world and galleries,” DeWoody says. “One of our missions is to make art more accessible—monetarily, conceptually, and physically.” DeWoody is focusing on exclusive collaborations, like a twisted take on Victorian wallpaper by the tattoo-artist-cum-sculptor-painter Scott Campbell. “Mention wallpaper to artists and most will say, ‘Hell, yeah!’ ” DeWoody says. “It’s no longer just the canvas—they get the entire wall.”
