The Illustrated Kitchen
When chef Marcus Samuelsson asked New York-based artist Rebekah Maysles to create illustrations for his newest cookbook, Marcus Off Duty, she took the same approach that Samuelsson does when creating a meal in his kitchen. “When I started working on the book, I would go to the farmer’s market and buy different ingredients and take them home and just sit and draw them,” says the artist. “I love drawing things from life.” Supplemented with colorful photographs, Maysles’s drawings and Samuelsson’s recipes feel deliciously in sync, but that synergy took two took years of collaborating to achieve. Well worth the effort, says Maysles: “It’s a way that I really like to work.”
