Rihanna Packs a Tiny Trunk for the Road, Hits the Salon with Her Niece

The perfect transitional accessory.

Rihanna is back in New York after a busy week in Paris — she debuted her second collection for her Puma x Fenty line, sat front-row at Dior alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Karlie Kloss, and Marion Cotillard, and wore puffer coats that she might have easily gotten lost inside. Then, back in New York, the singer-slash-designer debuted a whole new look: She posted a selfie to Instagram Wednesday featuring waist-length dreadlocks that she’s been working all week. (She told a fan on Twitter that she had wanted dreads since age 14, but her mother — “mama Fent’z” — wouldn’t permit it. There are some perks to growing up. On Friday, the singer took her niece to get her nails done — Rihanna’s nails, naturally already immaculate in bright red — armed with a tiny Louis Vuitton trunk that she had been rocking with various outfits throughout the week. Here, one of the best.

Who: Rihanna.

When: Thursday, October 6.

Where: Out and about in New York, New York.

What: A miniature Louis Vuitton trunk, a slouchy black blazer by Vetements, white pointy-toed pumps, and — most essentially — black track pants by Puma with snaps up the sides.

Why: This is like the night-out version of Rihanna’s trademark chill weekend style. She wears pieces and ensembles that might look absurd on the rest of us mere mortals, but on her, they’re quirky, cool, and nonchalant. For this look, she pairs a slightly oversized blazer with track pants (similar in silhouette to the Margiela ones she wore to ring in Labor Day weekend), and cradles an adorable Louis Vuitton miniature trunk in her arms. Plus, the tiny trunk is the perfect transitional accessory: She can wear it out on the town on Thursday, and then recycle it again the next day for a salon outing with family. Rihanna wins.
