Like All of Us, Ruth Negga Loves a Skirt with Pockets

The Best Actress nominee is radiant in Miu Miu.

It’s just more than two weeks away: The final countdown to the 89th annual Academy Awards has begun. And, while the Best Actress award, in the past, has often rewarded the proverbial leading lady, this year, there’s no dearth of women who are the stars of their own narratives. From Emma Stone in La La Land to Natalie Portman in Jackie, Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins and Isabelle Huppert in Elle, and, of course, Ruth Negga in Loving, the race has only grown tighter and more unpredictable as the SAG Awards, the Golden Globes, the BAFTA nominees, and more have unfolded in the past few months. Each actress has worked a rigorous campaign on late-night shows, on screen, and on the red carpet, where it seems awards season is as much about who dresses the part of winner as who actually takes home the award. Right now, we’re betting on Ruth Negga, for her red carpet chops alone; for the Academy Awards nominees’ luncheon in California early this week, she opted for both form and function, proving you can have it both ways.

Who: Ruth Negga.

When: Monday, February 7.

Where: The nominees’ luncheon for the 89th annual Academy Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

What: A short-sleeved, collared button-up sweater with sweet floral details, an A-line, knee-length leather skirt, and matching yellow kitten heels by Miu Miu from the brand’s Automne 2017 collection, paired with a pink woven clutch.

Why: Negga is the rare star who can pull off both ultra-glamorous and uber-gamine and precious on the red carpet. She opted for the latter for the Oscars nominees’ luncheon (indicating, perhaps, she’ll go for the former on game day, saving the best look for last) in a sweet, classically feminine Miu Miu design from the brand’s Pre-Fall 2017 collection. With its wide skirt and short-sleeved top, the look tends towards a retro, ’50s silhouette. But the real clincher here is in a single utilitarian detail: It’s a skirt with pockets. Pockets on the red carpet? Negga truly has it all.
