When Emily Current and Meritt Elliott left their namesake denim label Current / Elliott in 2012, it wasn’t the end of their creative partnership—it was just the beginning. Their new line, The Great, which launched last week, features vintage-inspired separates, like slouchy pants in Japanese twill and loose-fitting, cropped blazers—all products of their fifteen-year effort scouring flea markets and vintage stores. “Our girl is one part vintage lace and one part chuck tailors with beat up army pants,” explains Elliott, calling from their West Hollywood design studio. The women, who have been best friends since they met as students at UCLA more than 15 years ago (they even live on the same block), are big believers in classic Americana casual wear. “We love the tension between ultra feminine and super tom boy. With Current / Elliott we were just focused on bottoms and denim, and this is our opportunity to take our collection and world view and really make it come to life.”
