Cynthia Erivo’s Dior Gown is Pure Hollywood Opulence
Though the Toronto International Film Festival celebrates movie-making magic from a decidedly more northern setting, la-la land grandeur reliably comes alive on its red carpets. Look no further than Cynthia Erivo.
On Sunday night, the Oscar-nominated actor graced the 2026 TIFF red carpet in a Dior ensemble inspired by Hollywood itself. With thick tassels of ivory fabric florals offset against glistening black embroidery, the sweeping statement gown enveloped Erivo in a cloud of pure cinematic opulence. Though the design was a celebration of excess in fabric and shape, it also featured skillful exposure through slanting shoulder cutouts and a plunging V-neck. Never one to play it safe on the red carpet, Erivo dialed up the sculpturesque glamour with diamond jewels and a glittering green-and-pink manicure doubling as a subtle Wicked nod. The dress, from Dior cruise 2027, was of course the sartorial main event. In fact, it was quite literally made for a premiere red carpet.
Taking place at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Dior’s cruise show used the world of film as its backdrop and cited Los Angeles’s enigmatic creative persona as its muse. Along with presenting more-is-more sequins and movie-star-appropriate shearling coats, creative director Jonathan Anderson also peppered in avant-garde floral motifs as an homage to Californian poppies. For Erivo, who is marking her first film outside the Wicked universe since 2023, the theatrical design was particularly apt.
The star is in the midst of promoting Prima Facie, a legal drama based on an acclaimed single-person stage play of the same name, which has been described as her most challenging role yet. At her TIFF world premiere, she received a standing ovation. To celebrate the new career chapter, she naturally turned to Dior’s cruise 2027. Aside from citing Hollywood inspiration for this specific collection, Dior has largely taken on a cinematic bent with Jonathan Anderson at the helm. After a few seasons of integrating Anderson’s costume-designer expertise, the storied French house just announced a two-year partnership with cult-favorite production studio A24—which means even more escapist, world-building styles are sure to come. Hopefully, Erivo continues to wear them on the red carpet.
