Jennie’s Vintage Versace Gown Is Fit for a Forest Fairy

At a whimsical woodland wedding, leave it to Jennie to wear a dress rich with ’90s-era fashion folklore.

Last week, the singer celebrated the wedding of friends Matt Champion and Tavia Bonetti at a resort in British Columbia, Canada, wearing a dreamy dress designed by Gianni Versace himself from Versace Atelier’s couture spring 1997 show. The tri-colored gown featured diagonal draping along the bottom, with its greenish-yellow upper layer revealing tiers of gauzy blue fabric underneath. Up top, the asymmetrical silhouette featured one strap affixed by bright, crystal-embellished medallions. While on its original runway turn it was paired with silver sandals, Jennie styled the dress with chunky grey boots befitting the wilderness setting.

The picturesque location, overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Ruby Lake and surrounded by towering pines, was ripe with folkloric imagery and mermaidcore aesthetics. For Jennie, it also presented an opportunity to continue flexing her knack for vintage pulls.

Throughout the summer, the superstar has worked with stylist Sam Woolf to lean into ’90s fashion through exacting recreations. In July, she tapped Betsey Johnson to make her a lingerie set inspired by the brand’s spring 1999 collection. A few weeks later, she wore a pair of custom Calvin Klein backwards jeans, recreating a design from the spring 1993 show. Her most recent Versace look, however, is the same garment that first appeared on the catwalk decades ago. It was sourced from Raffe Vintage, an online archival designer curator beloved by the likes of Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. For Jennie, the dress doubled as a grand finale on a summer of highly impactful runway references.
