Never let the weather stop you from wearing exactly what you want. Jodie Turner-Smith certainly doesn’t. On a hot August day in Los Angeles this weekend, the actress embraced an archetypally autumnal outfit formula with a summer-approved twist.

Spotted at The Studio City Farmers Market on Sunday, Turner-Smith wore a look that, at first glance, hit all the notes for a crisp fall day: high-waisted lightwash barrel jeans with an oversized plaid button-up tucked in. Upon further inspection, however, her tartan-printed top subverted seasonal conventions. It was not a traditional flannel at all, but a sultry sheer top with a light-as-air fabrication. As she wheeled a shopping trolley filled with produce, its gauzy design billowed in the breeze, subtly revealing her skin underneath. Her styling doubled down on this skin-exposing allure—with rolled-up sleeves and undone buttons creating a plunging V-neck silhouette. She tied the off-duty look together with dainty layered necklaces, a Ritz Paris baseball cap from Frame, wired headphones, and blue checkered sneakers that satisfyingly matched her top.

Any fan of Turner-Smith knows she is highly skilled in the art of pairing classic blue jeans with unexpected tops. It’s something of a go-to for the 39-year-old red carpet darling, who has worn everything from a low-waisted baggy pair with a military jacket to a bedazzled iteration with a translucent bra. Naturally, she was also an early adopter of lingerie dressing—having made the case for chiffon suits and see-through lace slips over the years. Her latest outing effortlessly ups the ante on this reputation—taking Americana-adjacent workwear and infusing it with playful, skin-baring boldness.

Just like that, the plaid button-up is born anew. Leave it to Turner-Smith to reimagine an age-old garment on an afternoon grocery run.
