The whole “Jennifer Lawrence is just like your average twenty-something gal” thing would feel a little bit played out if it weren’t for the fact that it was actually true. Case in point: Her go-to way to de-stress is to curl up, in private, with a good old fashioned episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, just like so many of her non-famous peers. The only thing that’s different about J. Law’s version of this borderline-meditative ritual is the fact that hers takes place in a private “Kardashian Tent” on the set of her latest movie.
In an interview accompanying her September Vogue cover (…okay, that may be one other way she’s not that much like the rest of us), the Academy Award–winning actress opened up about what it was like to work on mother!, the upcoming, “shrouded-in-secrecy” film directed by her boyfriend, Darren Aronofsky, in which she stars alongside Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The filming experience was, in a word, intense. At one point, as Vogue explains, a scene was so heated that Lawrence started hyperventilating and dislocated a rib. “I ended up getting on oxygen,” she tells the magazine. “I have oxygen tubes in my nostrils, and Darren’s like, ‘It was out of focus; we’ve got to do it again.’ And I was just like, ‘Go fuck yourself.’”
In order to stay sane among all of the “darkness” on set, some of the crew members put together this “Kardashian Tent” for Lawrence to hang out in, which is exactly what it sounds like. The literal tent was meant to be a safe space where she could separate herself from the oft-overwhelming content of the film and chill among her fellow famous friends Kim, Khloé, Kourtney, Kendall, and Kylie. Well, sort of.
“It was a tent that had pictures of the Kardashians and Keeping Up With the Kardashians playing on a loop—and gumballs,” she says. “My happy place.”
As for Aronofsky? “I wasn’t involved in that,” he tells Vogue. “I was like, ‘What are you talking about, ‘the Kardashians?’” Apparently, he doesn’t share the same reality TV addiction as his GF.
Stars—they really are just like the rest of us!
