Sophie Turner Plays a Tattooed Troublemaker in the Creepy Trailer for Josie

This looks dark.

As Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and Jean Grey in X-Men, 21-year-old Sophie Turner has built a solid career as the face of two very popular franchises. But any young actor planning out the rest of their career needs a touch of indie cred here and there. All the better if they play against type with a gritty role, perhaps with some tattoos, maybe a stint in the criminal underworld or the backwoods of America. Turner seems to have taken that formula to heart, because in her new film Josie, she’s playing a tattooed stranger with a dark past stirring things up in a spooky Southern town.

The trailer, which dropped Wednesday, begins in the creepiest way possible. Turner’s character pokes her head out of the pool to find a random old woman standing over her and saying, “Well, who might you be, pretty little thing?” “I’m Josie,” she replies, “I just moved in the other night.” This seemingly innocuous statement is made otherwise by the soundtrack, a music-box playing in a minor key. Then, Josie pops up at the house of Dylan McDermott, who appears to be playing a Boo Radley type, but hot, and tells him “everything’s just fine” in a tone that implies the exact opposite. After that, she does some drugs with the local punks, sunbathes a lot, and runs around town smiling at everyone in a very unsettling way. At one point, another old woman (the harbingers of exposition, apparently) tells McDermott’s character, “I’m sure you’re lonely Hank, but a young girl is not the answer”— really good advice that I’m sure he’ll take. More drugs, sunbathing, and violence, and then we see Turner’s character snarl, “Those men are all cowards.” The trailer ends with Josie scaring the living daylights out of the audience and McDermott’s character, before quipping, “Wow, you let a young girl frighten you like that. What kind of guard are you?” Subtle.

There’s not much more about the actual plot. According to Rotten Tomatoes, though, Josie is about “the residents of a small, southern town,” who “are forever changed when the tattooed, sweet-talking stranger Josie (Sophie Turner) struts into town. Striking up relationships with a local young punk Marcus (Jack Kilmer) and her loner neighbor Hank (Dylan McDermott), she quickly becomes a hot topic of local gossip. But her true intentions for arriving in town are far more sinister when her dark past comes to light.”
