Given this season’s ubiquitous blasts of vibrant yellows, oranges, blues, and pinks on the runways, it’s no surprise that the Fauvist trend (think early Matisse and Derain) has extended to makeup. Stormy blue is back on eyelids, and tangerine, Pantone’s color of the year, is the blush of the moment. But it’s lips that benefit most from the riotous tints, with the strongest pouts daubed in slightly offbeat variations of red, from Zac Posen’s muted coral to bright poppy at Dior to deep magenta at Prabal Gurung. “Magenta is such an imaginative, wild-card shade,” says James Kaliardos, who painted the lips (and the rest of the faces) at Rodarte, Diane von Furstenberg, and Theyskens’ Theory—and created this fierce pucker. “Fauves,” after all, translates as “wild beasts.”
