‘Champagne Supernovas,’ A Book That Catalogues ’90s NYC Fashion Scene, to Be Adapted Into TV Series

It’s no secret the ’90s have been on everyone’s mind from designers to musicians to TV producers and, thanks to the latter, there will soon be yet another reason to revisit the grungy era. That’s because a TV series based on Maureen Callahan’s 2014 book Champagne Supernovas, which catalogues the rise of the decade’s fashion figureheads Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen, is now in development according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producer Johnny Lin, who heads Filmula which has acquired the distribution rights to past adaptations like Hunger Games, Magic Mike and The King’s Speech, is reportedly teaming up with The Storyhouse’s Ben Shields Catlin on Champagne Novas.

​”Johnny and I are excited to bring this story to television,” Catlin told THR. “Our goal is to ultimately bring the true narrative of the iconic 90’s New York fashion era that reinvented the industry to the audience, and we will do a great job of telling it. As we are aggressively developing, producing and financing film and TV projects, ‘Champagne Supernovas’ will be the first of many to come.”

The book itself, named after a lyric from an Oasis song, functions as something of a triple biography for its three main protagonists. Though, certainly almost every other relevant fashionista at the time makes an appearance.

There’s no indication on how producers plan to play it out on television, but there’s certainly a lot of material to mine though. Marc Jacobs and Kate Moss’ historic friendship, which dates back to the ’90s, is enough material for a show on its own. Here’s hoping the TV series shows the start of that famed friendship, and all of the times the designer got “Mossed.” For those unfamiliar with that term inspired by the model, she broke it down in a 2012 Vanity Fair interview saying, “People that don’t know me get Mossed. It means, I was gonna go home, but then I just got led astray. In the best possible way, of course. I mean, it’s always fun, and a good time.” Apparently, there have been many instances of Jacobs getting Mossed, including at her 2011 wedding to the Kills’ Jamie Hince. “I was supposed to have left a lot earlier than I did,” Jacobs recalled to Vanity Fair. “I couldn’t even remember the name of the hotel. You just don’t want to leave when you’re around Kate. You just don’t want it to end.” Given the characters, it seems likely that viewers may have the exact same sentiment when Champagne Supernovas airs.

No word on how exactly Moss and Jacobs and others featured in the book feel about the news.

Of course, it’s not the only ’90s fashion-themed project in the works. There’s currently two movies about Alexander McQueen in the works, and, of course, the new season of American Horror Story will focus on the murder of Gianni Versace.
