Fifty Shades of Red

Fall’s red ombré pout.

The artist Mark Rothko famously juxtaposed gradated color, giving the impression of vibration on his canvases. The makeup artist Violette, who conceived the dynamic pout seen here, proved to us that the technique is also effective on lips. She started with Dior Contour pencil in Thrilling Plum and then applied bands of Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Intrigue, Wonderland, and Kiss Me, letting them bleed together naturally. “I love to see it all mixing, creating new shades and dégradé,” she says. “I’m no longer in control of the makeup, so it’s sort of alive.” To pull off the ombré lip for the real world, Violette recommends sticking to just two colors, like crimson and orange. “And,” she adds, “maybe carry a straw.”
