It was a relationship that began at a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show afterparty and ended on Twitter. Supermodel Gigi Hadid and aspiring singer-songwriter Zayn Malik have announced they are going their own ways after more than two years together. News of the split broke earlier in the day in British tabloids, though not everyone was prepared to believe the pronouncements until the pair took to Twitter to issue separate breakup statements within minutes of each other.
"Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend," wrote Malik. "She has such an incredible soul. I'm grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ."
"Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years ... not only in the relationship, but in life in general," wrote Hadid. "I'm forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever's meant to be will always be. xG."
Despite 25-year-old Malik's recent tendency to enjoy a farmer's life in rural Pennsylvania and 22-year-old Hadid's continued runway tour of the world, the pair seemed to be going strong in recent months. Hadid frequently visited Malik at the farm (where he was also recording music), and fans believed Malik's recent chest tattoo of an eye was a tribute to Hadid. Hadid was also spotted with Malik's mother at a New York Rangers game around Christmas, and the couple were spotted out and about in New York City in January dressed in very Matrix-like matching outfits.
The pair first began dating after Malik recognized Hadid during a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show afterparty in 2015 and decided to introduce himself. The pair went on their first official date a week later, and then apparently bonded, like many millennials, by sharing viral videos and memes with each other via text.
But rumors say the pair simply grew apart and couldn't overcome the rift.
